If you want to know more about what makes a poem work or fail, you should check out our Reference section, which contains Poetry Links and The Handbook, available free, online, in the Reference section of this site.
The Handbook is a work in progress, looking at poetry from the point of view of the critic. It is divided into two parts: "Writing the Critique: Why a Poem Might Work" and "Writing the Critique: Why a Poem Might Not Work". At present, the latter is a blank document; eventually it will fill up.
If you feel your poetry background is a bit thin, you might want to check it out. It is written with personal anecdotes, examples, links to other sites, and of course is hilarious (maybe).
